The story of Holos.
“What would the world look like if we created from a place of already being whole?”
That question sparked the vision of Holos: a sanctuary and community rooted in nature, devoted to healing, and designed for the changing times.
But before the first seed was planted or a bamboo arch raised, Holos began with a song and a waterfall.
At 18, Ian-Michael Hébert left Alaska and hitchhiked south. One day, behind a waterfall in Mexico, he had a transcendent, unitive experience. From that day forward, he carried a vision: to build a place where others could remember their wholeness, too.
From Esalen to Stan Grof to the Diamante Valley.
Ian-Michael went on to study eco-resort design and counseling psychology, eventually helping rebuild the Esalen Institute. That work caught the attention of Stanislav Grof, who invited Ian-Michael to create a retreat center. But instead of California, Ian-Michael suggested Costa Rica.
Before the project could launch, Stan suffered a stroke. The dream paused, but it didn't end.
Soon after, Ian-Michael visited the Diamante Valley: fertile, wild, and echoing with waterfalls. There, beside the river, he knew. This was the place.
Since then Holos has shaped into not just an aspirational project, but a realized regenerative village and sanctuary. What many sustainable communities dream of, Holos has already accomplished: protected land, functioning infrastructure, aligned community, and a growing culture of transformation.
This is not shared with hubris, but as living proof that vision, when rooted in right relationship, becomes reality.
Through pandemic setbacks and bold leaps, Ian-Michael united seven farms to form Holos.
